Quality Check-Up: April 2018

 In Business, Quality

Tick-tock! Time is running out and September 14, 2018 is fast approaching. If you haven’t transitioned yet, you should begin thinking about doing so now.

Benefits of the New Model

As a business owner, I have come to appreciate this new model.  The new ‘risk-based thinking’ is necessary.  My personal favorite of the model are three key requirements: (1) Writing down your business goals; (2) Improving communication; and (3) more emphasis on risks for both your internal and external stakeholders.

Penning the Goals – This model really gives meaning to ‘putting pen to paper’ with respect to your business goals and visions.  If implemented properly, as Leaders, the activities within this new model facilitates in the sharing of Leadership vision with the rest of the Organization.  Benefits? –— The total Organization works together in achieving its business objectives.

Communication – Top-down sharing is another highlight of this new model.  Implementation here is not complex. It states that Leaders should identify the different communications so that the firm can collaborate better.

Risk Management – Most firms do not document risks until it is necessary. This model has aligned itself with ISO20001, ISO27001 and CMMI level 3 Risk Management practices.  By identifying risks early, you can implement better controls by putting together mitigation plan for project management, software/service delivery, back office support and information/data security.  The new risk requirements of the model provides a more disciplined and structured process to being ‘proactive.’

It may be intimidating to think about transitioning, but the advantages are well worth it! ISO 9001 is a highly sought-after certification, so staying up to date and retaining your certified status will pay off in the long run.

Integration with Other Quality Models

In this new update, the ISO 9001 model has aligned itself to integrate much better with ISO 20000, ISO 27000, and CMMI ML 3 requirements. We find that firms who have more than one certification will certainly benefit and can easily integrate ISO9001 requirements to their existing practices. We believe it really helps business leaders to effectively communicate with their management and total workforce to better address organizational issues, risks, and improve organizational knowledge. While it was the intention of the 2008 model, 2015 controls ensure the “Quality Check-up” that is required. When implemented well, everyone works together to aim for the same business goals and objectives.

Performance improvement is necessary in determining success and pulsing progress against yourbusiness target objectives.  When defining objectives, it is not only about the amount of effort placed into accomplishing a goal; but it is also imperative to develop a structure or a method of analyzing goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and consider time.

A specific goal is one where the objective is clearly defined and identified. Specifying a goal can allow for stronger communication between a team and an overall purpose of the goal. Making a goal measurable allows a company to judge its performance relative to the performance before the goal was created. Having metrics provides strong evidence that your goal is making an impact across the company. Attainable goals are realistic. Problems arise when companies set objectives that are just not feasible. It is important to understand your company’s strengths and weaknesses while developing and develop an obtainable goal around them.

Relevant goals are ones that directly correlate or will have some impact with the organization. Accomplishing tasks that do not further the success of the company is a waste of time. Make sure that your goals align properly with the company’s aspirations. Lastly, timing is everything. Creating a schedule of when goals should be completed will allow a company to stay on track towards success and strengthen communication across departments.
